Exclusive Pre-Fight Interview with Omar Henry

Exclusive Pre-Fight Interview with Omar Henry
By DeBorah Bowen & Mario Cabrera, Jr

Omar Henry is a force to be reckoned with; just 23yrs old and he is already one the hottest junior middleweight fighters in 2010. Omar Henry’s professional debut began on July 18th 2008 against Terence Anderson which ended quickly in the first round (1:15) by knock out. He since has gone on to win seven straight bouts, six by way of knock out and one by unanimous decision.

Omar will be going for his 8th straight win this Friday March 12th 2010 against Francisco Javier Reza at the Gaylord Hotel in Texas. Omar took some time out from his training regime, to speak to the Boxing Republic on Tuesday evening for a 1 on 1 pre-fight exclusive interview.

DB: Good evening Omar how are you this evening? My name is DeBorah Bowen and I write for the Boxing Republic.

OH: Hi DeBorah I am doing well thank you.

DB: Omar, who is your manger, your trainer and do you have a promoter?

OH: My managers are Jah Johns and Cameron Dunkin; my promoter is Top Rank and my trainer is Ronnie Shields

DB: What made you get into boxing?

OH: Growing up as a kid in Chicago, I had one day watched Roy Jones fight I looked and was amazed by the fight and said oh wow! This is exciting, I want to be a boxer too it was just that one little moment and from there it’s been a long journey so far.

DB: Yes that’s great! You have an impressive record right now 7-0, 6 of them are TKO’s and 1 unanimous decision. Omar have you have sparred with any top ranked fighters?

OH: Yes I sparred with Kermit Cintron, Vanes Martirosyan, Lanard Lane, Vernon Phillips and recently for this upcoming fight Danny Jacobs.

DB: Omar, what weight class do you currently fight in?

OH: Junior Middleweight

DB: What gym do you fight out of and in which city?

OH: I box out of Houston Texas and I train at Savannah’s Boxing Gym.

DB: Who was your favorite boxer growing up? And who do you follow now?

OH: Growing up my favorite boxer was Mike Tyson and Roy Jones. But as I got more into my pro career I started to follow Miguel Cotto the most.

DB: Right, I have read a few articles that compared your boxing style to that of Miguel Cotto. What’s your view on this?

OH: Yes, I watch him and admire him, he is the former WFO Champion but I’m Omar Henry I am not Miguel Cotto. I don’t do everything that he does; I have a different kind of style as I am more versatile actually than he is. My hands are a little fast and my footwork is faster. I do a lot of common stuff that he does not do. But I do have my own style really. As the people that I have fought can see.

DB: I know you have this fight coming up this Friday against Francisco Javier Reza’ who would you like to fight after this? Do you have a wish list?

OH: Well, whoever my promoter puts in front of me. It’s all in the hands of my promoter Top Rank; my managers Jah Johns and Cameron Dunkin. I’m will to fight anybody.

DB: Omar I know that you are preparing for you bout this Friday so on that note we at the Boxing Republic want thank you so much for taking the time out to speak to us. I look forward to speaking to you again

OH: Me too! Thank you
