WHAT: Le and Thomson will work out for the media just three days prior to their respective bouts on the STRIKEFORCE: Evolution mixed martial arts (MMA) fight card on Saturday, Dec. 19, at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on West Coast).
The undefeated Le, one of the most dynamic fighters in MMA, will enter the cage for the first time since relinquishing the STRIKEFORCE middleweight (185 pounds) title to concentrate on an acting career. Le will face Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith, a hard-hitting puncher and contestant on season four of Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter reality show, in the main event of the evening.
Le recently emerged as Hollywood’s newest martial arts action star with roles in Fighting (starring Channing Tatum and Terrence Howard) and Pandorum (starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster) in 2009. In his last fight, Le scored a stunning third round TKO over MMA legend Frank Shamrock after breaking Shamrock’s arm with a round kick on March 29, 2008.
Thomson will square off with Interim Lightweight Champion Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez in a long-awaited rematch to determine the undisputed king of STRIKEFORCE’s 155-pound division.
Thomson’s start will be his first since September 20, 2008 when he notched his eighth straight victory by stopping Ashe Bowman in the first round of their meeting at the world-famous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills. Three separate injuries have since sidelined Thomson, who seized the lightweight crown by earning a five round, unanimous judges’ decision over Melendez at HP Pavilion on June 27, 2008.

In other SHOWTIME televised fights, undefeated “King Mo” Lawal will make his STRIKEFORCE debut when he meets two-time All-American college wrestler Mike Whitehead, former Olympic wrestling silver medalist Matt “The Law” Lindland will battle submission ace “Jacare” Souza at middleweight and “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler will face Trevor Prangley, also at middleweight.
