The 47th WBC Convention

THE 47th WBC CONVENTION BEGAN
BEFORE NUMEROUS ATTENDANTS
Having approximately 400 people in attendance, taking into account delegates, members, local boxing people and public in general, this morning, the 47th World Boxing Council Annual Convention began, being staged at Ramada Ballroom of the site hotel on the beautiful island (today cold and drizzling) known as Jeju.
The first part of the opening session was as spectacular and colorful as this meetings have always been characteristic of, furthermore, the emotional part which is obligatory in these conventions, mostly took place when our President, Jose Sulaiman Chagnon gave his vibrant report that lasted a little more than 40 minutes, triggering loud rounds of applause and general recognition to him as well as to the organization which has been considered the most important in the world of professional boxing since almost a century ago.
Just like in every great occasion, prior to the speech given by our President, who at a certain point emphasized: “If preventive measures are not taken right away, I am afraid that boxing could disappear in no longer than 25 years”, the parade of flags of the different Federations that form the WBC was held, also appearing some of the national symbols of the host country, Korea, the Mexican flag, the WBC flag and of course an amazing green and gold world champion belt, all of them carried by gorgeous and young local ladies.
The Governor of the Island, Mr. Kim Tae Hwan, gave a welcome speech, in which he included some interesting data such as the fact that Jeju has, in its territory and among many other things, 347 volcanoes. Such an important person presented an award to Jose Sulaiman, after having received a symbolic world champion belt.
Another round of applause was heard once again when some of the greatest Korean boxers were introduced, all of whom have been world champions, and among whom Jungkoo Chang, Sungkil Moon and Injin Chi, stand out in our standpoint. Injin Chi is the most recent Korean fighter who has reached the maximum level up to now.
We would like to say that Jungkoo Chang won the Lightflyweight world title and is the holder of the record of title defenses by a champion in the WBC scope in such division, having made 14.
After the opening, World Boxing Council President, Jose Sulaiman, presented several awards in the second and final part of the meeting that began the 47th Convention of our organization.
President Sulaiman, awarded Mexican TV Network, TV Azteca, in recognition to the tournament for young boxers, named Campeon Azteca, that is being held in Mexico City and that is expected to be the origin of some of the boxing stars that will succeed in the near future.
The award, a small metallic ring, was received by Bernardo Villacecias, TV Azteca´s Marketing Director.
A posthumous homage was paid to former WBC Vice-president, Edmund Lipinski, of Russia, forever held in the highest esteem and respected by everyone in boxing. Mr. Lipinski passed away in 2009 while he was carrying out his duty in boxing, representing the WBC out of his country, in Germany.
The act, in an extremely moving atmosphere, led to emotional feelings, and it was Mr. Lipinski´s wife, Mrs. Alevtina Lipinskaya who was presented with several awards, including the respective recognition of the audience.
Also, other people were awarded, each one in his field, American Physician from California, Dr. Gerald Finerman, as well as Korean Commissioner, Major Lee for having completed some of the most important achievements in their careers respectively.
Applause, remembrances, and everything that is usually seen in these cases took place during the act.
Two hours later, all Ring Officials in Attendance met for a workshop. Our Executive Secretary, Mauricio Sulaiman was with them, leading the meeting in which different topics were addressed, all of them important to the improvement of our sport.
One of the main topics was the possibility of a change in the 10-point must system, looking to improve decisions and therefore everything in boxing.
It was pointed out that there is a need to control better the traveling of ring officials to the place of the bout, as well as their arriving in time, not only to the city where the fight will be held, but also to the arena.
It was agreed to have a second meeting tomorrow at 9:30, so Judges and Referees will not be present in the General Assembly meeting of the Convention.
The meeting was full, as approximately 100 people were in attendance, taking into account referees, judges, some Commissioners, ring doctors, interpreters, etc.
