Lee McAllister: Shot at Glory Once More!

When a fighter tastes defeat it’s important that he shows no signs or scars in his next big fight. For Scottish lightweight Lee McAllister he gets his shot at title glory once again on June 19th when he bids to win the Commonwealth lightweight title, recently vacated by Amir Khan, against unknown Godfred Sowah in his native Aberdeen.

With the taste of potential title success only weeks away I asked him about the defeat he suffered when fighting for the British title against champion John Murray back in January. “To be honest in the opening four rounds I was finding the fight easy. I was expecting a war and John to hit harder, given his reputation. I became complacent and didn’t keep my composure”. That lack of composure saw him end up on the deck when Murray landed a cracking body shot which ended the contest, albeit a bit prematurely for McAllister. “I thought the referee would’ve given me every opportunity to continue because it was for such a prestigious title. But after the fight I was pissed off at myself. I was distressed and in shock because I should’ve won the fight”.

McAllister does not lack in confidence when talking about the future. A rematch with Murray, a shot at European champion Anthony Mezzache and a fight with Amir Khan are fights that he wants. For McAllister he feels the sky is the limit. “There is no-one out there who has better ability than me. I’ve got the chin, the speed and the balls. I’ll take on anyone”. But before conquering the world McAllister may have to conquer Scotland first.

Calls are being made for McAllister to fight fellow Scot and former Commonwealth champion Willie Limond, a contest that perhaps should’ve gone ahead a few years according to Lee. “Willie Limond was offered £25,000, not including his purse, to come and fight me. He blatantly refused the fight. It was well documented in the media and I have the proof as well. I’d fight Limond anytime and beat him”.

A motorbike accident five years ago in which he was the victim of an alleged hit and run accident nearly ended his career and dreams of a career littered with big fights and titles. An incident that to this day gives him added motivation and belief. “It was the first day of my holiday in Greece and I rented a motorbike and I got smashed. I was told that I would barely be able to walk again but I proved them wrong and I’ll prove anyone else wrong who has doubts about me”

It’s clear that Lee McAllister has the confidence and if talk won titles he’d be world champion already. But next month he realises that he must win his fight against Sowah. He got a shot at the British title and let his heart rule his head. He can’t afford anymore slip ups and the fight against Sowah is a must win and one he arguably has to win well in. Discipline appears to be the key for McAllister as he explained. “As long as I keep my composure and keep my head I’ll be winning that title. I’m not interested in watching dvds of my opponent. He should be more worried about me”.

At the moment the jury is still out on Lee McAllister. Next month is the time to deliver and give his loyal fans a night to remember by winning the Commonwealth lightweight title. Only then can he start thinking about bigger names and bigger fights.
