Rope-A-Dope Boxing Strategy

Ali vs Foreman

Ali vs Foreman

Just ask George Foreman if the rope-a-dope boxing strategy really works. Big George will be the first to admit that it does. You see, Foreman was a victim of this particular strategy when he faced Muhammad Ali in the famous, “Rumble in the Jungle” bout which was held in Zaire in 1974.

The strategy is simple, but the fighter implementing it has to be tough and have a solid defense for it to work. This strategy involved Muhammad Ali laying on the ropes with his defense up, blocking and occasionally countering big George Foreman’s punches. The idea is to wear out the opponent and then capitalize on their fatigue which is exactly what happened in the fight as George Foreman simply punched himself into exhaustion only to have Ali knock him out for his efforts.

Using this particular ring strategy can work and has worked from time to time but the dangers far outweigh the advantages which is why most coaches never really endorse the strategy to their fighters. You have to be tough and you have to have tremendous defense to pull it off.
