GREAT CHAMPION SAENSAK HONOURED WITH LAST RITES
Dozens of media representatives, former boxing champions, boxing promoters and dignitaries attended the last religious rites in Bangkok today for the kingdom’s great boxing hero Saensak Muangsurin who died on Thursday.
Saensak’s name became inscribed in the annals of boxing fame when he won the WBC world championship on his third professional fight.
Presiding over four days of Buddhist rites to honour the passing of a great champion, WBC Vice President Pol. General Kovid Bhakdibhumi said Saensak’s name, “Would always be remembered for his great boxing achievements and for his tremendous resolve and courage to overcome what others would consider to be impossible. His achievements in the ring are immortalized. Saensak was a great boxer, a great Thai, and a great person for the world.”
Wreathes laid at today’s service came from Thai government Ministries, the Sports Authority and the World Boxing Council’s President Dr. Jose Sulaiman.
General Kovid said the sports enthusiasts that came to attend the first day of rites for Saensak showed the huge popularity of an exceptional Thai boxer who pushed himself up from poverty to become the champion boxer of the world and an elite sporting identity.
An even bigger gathering is expected for the cremation ceremony next Monday night. Saensak (58) died in hospital from an extreme intestinal disorder.
