When sparring in boxing, the first thing that must be understood is that its a learning tool for boxers, so correct personal protective equipment and supervision from a qualified boxing coach is essential for safety. The protective equipment helps a fighter to concentrate more on learning as the equipment lessens the impact of the opponents punches. The coach is present to supervise any sparring that gets too spirited between the boxers and gives input on key points witnessed.

Sparring should be utilized to apply new punches, practice defense and movement techniques as well as practicing ring generalship and positioning. The worst mistake in sparring is to go through the motions and treat it as a real fight in which you rely totally on your natural instincts. Yes, it is a form of combat; You have to learn how to handle it and the way you feel about it. After a while boxers begin to enjoy themselves as they see it for what it truly is; A great physical and mental CHALLENGE!

Sparring is a great way to get conditioned; It’s a great way to practice all that has been taught to you; It’s an even greater way to turn weaknesses into strengths by working on them consistently in real time combat. Always go into a sparring session with a game plan and remain composed at all times. If you get hit, acknowledge it and try to understand why you got hit as there is always a reason for it. In doing this you may prevent it from happening to you again.

If you lose you temper and bitterly turn the sparring session to a heated exchange, you are just one step closer to losing the fight as your game plan has flown out the window and you begin fighting on instinct again. Remain composed at all times, especially when you get hit. Remain focused and relaxed. Keep your eyes on your opponent. Listen to your coach. Sparring is a great way to improve your boxing ability and the more you do it, the better you will get. Enjoy it…
