Catching The Jab

Catching the jab is one of the first things a boxing trainer will teach you to do when you initially begin learning about defense in prize fighting. It’s a fairly simple and straight forward technique that once practiced often enough, becomes second nature.

When your opponent throws a jab towards you, just simply catch it with your open right hand. Don’t over reach when trying to catch the jab as this will cause your guard to be out of position. When using this technique, keep in mind that your chin must remain tucked so that a strong blow from your opponent won’t force your glove onto your nose but rather your forehead.

Many seasoned smart fighters out there fire solid jabs at a lazy catchers glove to force them to hit themselves. This move catches the defender off guard and gets there attention. The technique of jab catching can and should be practiced with your coach or training partner as often as possible when you begin. Repetition is key.
