Edito Villamor, the chief trainer for the legendary ALA Boxing gym in the Philippines has embarked on what many Filipino boxing experts would call the start of a stellar coaching career. Villamor began his boxing journey as former Filipino amateur standout, winning a national title which prompted him to turn professional.
As a pro, Villamor’s skills got him ranked number 1 in the world by all major sanctioning bodies and even got him a shot at the legendary undefeated Mexican boxer Ricardo Lopez. A chronic hand injury ended his career with a tremendous professional record of 29 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw with 26 knockouts to his name.
A Filipino boxing icon during his fighting years and now becoming a coaching icon with the legendary ALA Boxing team. Villamor trains fighters in both the ALA Gym in the Philippines and Wildcard Boxing Club when in the USA. He alongside Freddie Roach primed the Philippine Boxing Team to destroy the Mexican Team, 5 fights to 1, in route to gaining the Boxing World Cup Trophy.
Edito ‘ALA’ Villamor is currently shaping boxing world champion Donnie ‘The Snake’ Nietes, contenders Rey ‘Boom Boom’ Bautista, AJ ‘Bazooka’ Banal, Z ‘The Dream’ Gorres and Micheal Domingo to name a couple.
I remember personally having lunch with Mr Antonio Aldeguer, Edito Villamor and a number of other boxing insiders in Cebu City on the day of the Vuyisile Bebe Vs Rey Bautista fight when something he said really touched me. Villamor said “Pj, whatever you do in boxing, do it for the love of boxing, not just for money or fame but for the love of boxing”. That sentence has stuck with me till this day. Edito is a man that lives by his word and success can only follow great coaches and life teachers like him.
