Breathing in boxing

Breathing in boxing correctly is often an overlooked concept but any fighter who doesn’t take the time to get their breathing right will surely suffer in a training session let alone in a competitive bout. When watching some of the greatest boxers in the world, you will notice that they exhale as they deliver a punch.
This is very important. Forget about looking silly because you’re making whizzing sounds from your exhaled oxygen. It doesn’t matter what the crowd thinks. Whats matters is that your punches are snapping and your breathing is in good order. Good punchers like ‘Baby Bull’ Juan Diaz yell out with every punch thrown. Believe it or not, when you fire a punch and exhale at the same time, it gives an extra snap to your punch. Try to punch without breathing and then try again with a breath; you’ll notice a distinct difference.
The worst mistake is to hold your breathe whilst punching. Imagine what would happen if you threw a straight with no breathe at all and it connects without any extra snap and your opponent landed a left rip to your midsection at the same time; You would have the wind knocked clean out of you whilst wasting a perfect power punch on your opponent. Not good.
Just remember that you should exhale for every punch that you throw; If you throw multiple punches (combinations), make sure you over-compensate the oxygen by sucking in rapid, multiple deep breathes after your punches are thrown. In between rounds, try to slow your heart rate down by taking long deep breathes. Again, in the heat of the moment, people forget the essentials so it’s up to good coaches to remind their fighters. Work on your breathing often; Take notice of it; Awareness is the key; It just might save you in a fight.
