On the 24th of June 2008 in Melbourne; Australia’s very own Vodafone Arena hosted one last dance inside the square ring between two boxing hall of famers. The fighters names are Jeff “The Marrickville Mauler” Fenech (29 wins-3 losses-1 draw) and “The Professor” Azumah Nelson (39 wins-6 losses-2 draws); two all time greats who came out of retirement to finish off a trilogy that should have happened more than a decade ago.
The fights action could never live up to their previous two confrontations but the two fighters both aged in their respective forties gave it all they had to produce an entertaining little junior middleweight fight in which they showcased some flashes of former brilliance with their heavier and slower body frames.
A majority points decision was handed to Jeff Fenech over the 10 rounds fought but the crowd of more than 6000 plus showed a little disgust and grew agitated at Fenech’s decision to jump on his bike for the last two rounds; A technique to protect his lead and one that a younger Jeff Fenech would never have used.
Nevertheless, A victory over Nelson has squared things up for Fenech which leaves their trilogy at 1 win and 1 draw a piece. Though the fight had little if any significance in the current world of boxing, it meant something to them and with that I praise them for risking their legacies to square off for one last stanza.
With the money that both men made, and the great time they had leading up to and during the fight, lets hope these two war horses hang the gloves up for good and enjoy their retirement from the ring. These two multi division champions have nothing left to prove in the fight game.
